Carole Stark: State law more important now

The Supreme Court's McCutcheon decision last week is appalling. It isn't as if we don't already have big money dictating the political process.

Now the court has removed caps and big money can just flow into the coffers of federal candidates. A recent NPR program stated that politicians spend 40 percent of their time raising money. I think dissenting Judge Stephen Breyer said it best: This "decision eviscerates our nation's campaign finance laws, leaving a remnant incapable of dealing with the grave problems of democratic legitimacy that those laws were intended to resolve."

When money calls the tune, we the people will not be heard. And I am not sure we are heard anymore. This makes the issue of transparency even more crucial and California has two laws ready to be passed addressing this: Senate Bill 27 and SB 52. These laws require that those organizations or donors paying for political ads be fully disclosed so that we know who is trying to buy votes. State Sen. Anthony Cannella is in support. Call your senator and tell them to vote "yes." It is an important start.
